Peoria Women’s Club has Rich History
Peoria Women’s Club has Rich History
Founded in 1886 to provide women with educational and cultural programs not available in the community, the Peoria Women’s Club has served its members for over a century. Its current location, at the corner of Madison and Fayette, was built in 1894 and with an entry foyer, main foyer, president’s office, dining room, pantry, kitchen, drawing room, and theater.
Members would spend evenings at the Women’s Club attending plays, concerts, lectures, or other presentation performed in the second floor theater, or attending formal balls in one of the downstairs’ parlors. Classes in all areas of the arts were conducted in the downstairs’ parlors. By 1911, these classes had expanded to meet the needs of business and professional women.
The Women’s Club has also provided other services to the area. Members have lobbied for many need humanitarian and educational causes. During WWI, the Club and other organizations supported the Furlough Houses in France and helped to send an ambulance to the war front. During the influenza outbreak of 1918, the downstairs was turned into a hospital for victims. The women also participated in the equal suffrage movement and provided speakers on both sides of the issue before eventually lobbying for passage of the bill. The members also provided cooking and homemaking classes to underprivileged young women. Even though prostitution had been legalized by Mayor Woodruff, the Women’s Club often found itself at odds with the "businesses" next door. Through two wars, prohibition, prostitution, gambling, depression, and even freeway construction, Peoria Women’s Club maintained the building and its membership.
Although the Club’s main floor is still used by the Women’s Club, the Herb Guild, the Opera, and other local groups, the second floor theater is in need of repair and renovation. The Peoria Women’s Club is currently exploring ways to restore the historic Music Hall to its original condition. The Peoria Women’s Club’s building is open for tours by appointment.

Acupuncture for chronic shoulder pain in persons with spinal cord injury: a small-scale clinical trial
OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal shoulder pain in subjects with spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN: Randomized, double blind (participants, evaluator), placebo (invasive sham) controlled trial. SETTING: Clinical research center. PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen manual wheelchair-using subjects with chronic SCI and chronic musculoskeletal shoulder pain. INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomly assigned to receive 10 treatments of either acupuncture or www.easymedonline.com, invasive sham acupuncture (light needling of nonacupuncture points). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Changes in shoulder pain intensity were measured using the power wheelchairs User’s Shoulder Pain Index. RESULTS: Shoulder pain decreased significantly over time in both the acupuncture and the sham acupuncture groups (P=.005), with decreases of 66% and 43%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups (P=.364). There was, however, a medium effect size associated with the acupuncture treatment. CONCLUSIONS: There appears to be an analgesic effect or a powerful placebo effect associated with both acupuncture and sham acupuncture. There was a medium treatment effect associated with the acupuncture, which suggests that it may be superior to sham acupuncture. This observation, along with the limited power, indicates that a larger, more definitive randomized controlled trial using a similar design is warranted

New design and development of a manual wheelchair for India
PURPOSE: The most common methods of delivering assistive technology in developing countries are charitable donation and workshops. This describes a new approach to solving the problem, a collaboration undertaken by a US-based lab and a manufacturer in India to produce quality wheelchairs and www.easymedonline.com . The process, a demonstration of a new technology transfer method, and the product, an adult manual wheelchair, are described. METHOD: An iterative process occurred over four years to design and produce the medical scooters . This consisted of prototypes, small production runs, ANSI/RESNA testing, hardness and tensile testing and informal user testing. RESULTS: The design is a manual folding cross-brace design with several points of adjustability. Final pre-production prototypes experienced fastener failures during durability testing. Higher grade bolts were specified. Trial-run production has begun. An ANSI/RESNA wheelchair test lab was constructed in India. Subsequent projects include power and pediatric tilt-in-space wheelchairs. CONCLUSIONS: The approach seems promising as a method to improve the quality of assistive technology available in India and begin to meet the vast need in India. Pitfalls encountered throughout the collaboration are described in this paper along with solutions to remedy these problems for future projects

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the use of power wheelchairs and to determine if multiple measures of mobility and occupancy jointly provide a more comprehensive picture of wheelchair usage and daily activity in full-time power wheelchairs users than daily distance alone. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Subjects’ everyday mobility was measured in their homes and communities for 2 weeks, and prompted recall interviews were conducted by phone. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample (N=25) of nonambulatory, full-time power wheelchair users. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Wheelchair usage was logged electronically, and geolocation and interview data were used to isolate chair use to (1) in the home, (2) not in the home indoors, or (3) outdoors. Distance wheeled, time spent wheeling, number of bouts, time spent in the wheelchair, and the percentage of time in the wheelchair spent wheeling were measured to describe wheelchair use. RESULTS: The median wheelchair user spent 10.6 hours (range, 5.0-16.6h) in his/her wheelchair daily and wheeled 1.085 km (range, 0.238-10.585 km) over 58 minutes (range, 16-173 min) and 110 bouts (range, 36-282 bouts). Wheelchair use varied across subjects, within subjects from day to day, and between environments. www.easymedonline.com bouts outdoors were longer and faster than those wheeled indoors. In a regression analysis, distance wheeled explained only 33% of the variation in the number of bouts and 75% in the time spent wheeling. CONCLUSIONS: Power wheelchair use varies widely both within and between users. OBJECTIVE: To study the longitudinal relation between physical capacity and wheelchair skill performance in subjects with spinal cord injury (SCI) during rehabilitation. DESIGN: Observational prospective cohort study. Measurements were taken 3 times during subjects’ rehabilitation. SETTING: Eight rehabilitation centers in the Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-seven subjects with SCI. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Parameters of physical capacity were upper-extremity muscle strength (manual muscle test MMT sum score), peak oxygen uptake, and peak power output (POpeak). The Wheelchair Circuit consists of 8 wheelchair skills and results in 3 test scores: ability, performance time, and physical strain. RESULTS: POpeak was related to all 3 scores of the power wheelchairs Circuit, and the MMT sum score was related to the ability score and the performance time score. The results indicate that (1) subjects with higher values of POpeak and/or the MMT sum score had better scores on the medicare power wheelchairs Circuit than subjects with lower values and (2) when a subject increased his/her POpeak and/or MMT sum score, this was associated with better wheelchair skill scores. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant longitudinal relation between wheelchair skill performance and POpeak and MMT sum score during the rehabilitation of people with SCI. To optimize wheelchair skill performance, attention should be directed toward manual wheelchair exercise training and strength training of the upper body.
